Back Pain Treatment in Wembledon & Reading | Yin-Yang Chinese Medicine
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people in the UK reduce their activity, take time off work, or put up with daily discomfort that gradually wears them down. Painkillers manage the sensation — they do not resolve what is driving it.
At Yin-Yang Chinese Medicine, our Hong Kong-registered practitioners treat the full range of conditions we treat through acupuncture, Tui Na, and bone-setting, bringing the clinical depth of Hong Kong's hospital system to our Wimbledon and Reading clinics.
Whether your pain sits in the lower back, mid-spine, or radiates into the hips and legs, TCM identifies the structural and physiological root — and treats it directly.
Back pain stops you mid-stride — at a desk, in the car, or reaching for something on a shelf. Painkillers manage the sensation. They don't resolve what's driving it.
Our Hong Kong-registered practitioners bring hospital-trained clinical expertise to Wimbledon and Reading — treating back pain at its root through acupuncture, Tui Na, and bone-setting.
What Causes Back Pain?
Back pain is not a diagnosis — it is a symptom with many possible drivers. Understanding which type you have determines which treatment will actually work.
Mechanical back pain
The most common category. Caused by strain or injury to the muscles, ligaments, discs, or vertebral joints. Typically worsens with movement and improves with rest. Poor posture, prolonged sitting, and repetitive loading are frequent contributors — patterns that define most modern working lives.
Inflammatory and nerve-related back pain
When inflammation compresses spinal nerves, pain travels beyond the back itself — into the buttocks, thighs, or calves. Herniated discs, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and facet joint irritation fall into this category. Pain that does not improve with rest, or that wakes you at night, warrants closer attention.

Classified as chronic after 12 weeks. Neighbouring muscles compensate, movement patterns change, and the original source becomes harder to isolate. TCM's whole-body diagnostic approach is particularly effective where symptom-chasing has already failed.
How TCM Diagnoses Back Pain
Western imaging identifies structural abnormalities — a bulging disc, joint degeneration, or narrowed spinal canal. TCM adds a layer that imaging cannot show: why the body's own recovery mechanisms have stalled.
Our practitioners assess back pain through three primary diagnostic patterns:
Diagnosis
These patterns are not mutually exclusive. Many patients present with combinations, particularly in chronic cases. The diagnostic consultation maps which pattern dominates — and treatment is calibrated accordingly.
Kidney Deficiency 腎虛
Chronic aching that worsens with fatigue and a sensation of cold in the lower back. Common in long-term sufferers and older patients. TCM links the kidneys to bone health and lumbar strength.

Qi & Blood Stagnation 氣滯血瘀
Cold-Damp Obstruction 寒濕痹阻
A heavy, stiff sensation that worsens in cold or damp weather. Responds strongly to warming needle techniques.

Chronic aching that worsens with fatigue; cold sensation in the lower back. Common in long-term sufferers and older patients.
Sharp, fixed pain worsened by pressure and improved by gentle movement. Typically follows acute injury or prolonged immobility.

Our Treatment Approach
Yin-Yang Chinese Medicine uses a multi-modal approach. Most back pain presentations benefit from more than one treatment method applied in combination.
Acupuncture for back pain
Tui Na deep tissue mobilisation
Bone setting for structural alignment
Fine needles reduce local inflammation, stimulate nerve signalling, and interrupt the pain-spasm cycle that perpetuates many chronic back conditions.
Targets the fascia, deep musculature, and spinal joints directly, releasing adhesions and restoring range of motion. Effective for entrenched mechanical patterns.
Where joint misalignment contributes to pain, bone-setting addresses the structural component directly. Practitioner Winton trained at Tung Wah Eastern Hospital, Hong Kong.

Back Pain vs Sciatica
Know the Difference
If your pain travels below the knee, numbness or tingling is present, or one leg feels weaker than the other, sciatica and nerve pain may be the primary diagnosis. Our practitioners assess both presentations and adjust treatment accordingly.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment
The first session begins with a structured consultation. Your practitioner will take a detailed history — when the pain started, what aggravates and relieves it, your sleep quality, energy levels, and any previous imaging or treatment. Pulse and tongue diagnosis are performed as standard TCM diagnostic tools.
From this, a treatment plan is established. You will know exactly which modalities will be used and why — there are no opaque protocols. Treatment begins in the same session where appropriate.
Patients commonly notice reduced pain intensity and improved mobility within the initial sessions. Back pain with a longer history typically requires a sustained course to address the underlying pattern rather than symptom management alone.
Your First Visit
Your practitioner takes a full history — onset, aggravating factors, sleep, energy, any prior imaging. Pulse and tongue diagnosis are performed as standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions will I need for back pain?
This depends on whether your pain is acute or chronic, and which pattern is presenting. Acute mechanical back pain often responds quickly. Chronic or complex patterns — particularly those involving nerve compression or long-term postural dysfunction — require a more sustained course. Your practitioner will give a realistic indication after the first consultation.
Can I claim back pain treatment through health insurance?
Yin-Yang Chinese Medicine is registered with AXA Health, Vitality Health, Aviva, and WPA. Check your policy for TCM coverage and contact your insurer before booking to confirm your entitlement.
Do you treat back pain in older patients or post-surgical cases?
