What is Chinese herbal medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine is a 2,000-year-old clinical system that uses plant, mineral, and animal-derived substances to regulate the body's internal environment. At Yin-Yang Clinic, each prescription is a compound formula — typically 8 to 15 ingredients — calibrated to your specific pattern of disharmony as identified through tongue diagnosis, pulse diagnosis, and clinical history.
The goal is not to suppress symptoms. It is to correct the underlying physiological imbalance driving them.
How it works — a clinical explanation
Your practitioner identifies your TCM pattern — for example, Liver Qi stagnation, Kidney Yang deficiency, or Blood Heat — through a structured diagnostic process. This maps directly onto measurable physiological states: hormonal imbalance, inflammatory response, autonomic nervous system dysregulation. The herbal formula is then prescribed in granule or decoction form, adjusted at each follow-up based on your body's response.
Herbal medicine vs. Western pharmaceuticals
Western pharmaceuticals target specific receptor pathways. Chinese herbal medicine works systemically — modulating multiple physiological pathways simultaneously. This makes it particularly effective for chronic, multi-symptom conditions where a single-target drug produces limited results. It is not a replacement for emergency care. It is a clinically validated adjunct — and we are transparent about where each approach applies.

Frequently asked questions
Is Chinese herbal medicine safe in the UK?
Yes — when prescribed by a qualified practitioner. All herbal formulas use pharmaceutical-grade granules from licensed suppliers. We screen for herb-drug interactions at every consultation and align fully with RCHM safety guidelines.
How long does a herbal consultation take?
Your first consultation is 60 minutes. Follow-up appointments are typically 30 minutes. Most patients see meaningful change within 4–8 weeks, depending on the condition.
Do you offer Cantonese-speaking consultations?
Yes. All practitioners at Yin-Yang Clinic are native Cantonese speakers. If you've been managing a treatment plan from Hong Kong, you can continue that conversation — in the same language, to the same clinical standard.
Can I take herbal medicine alongside my GP prescription?
In most cases, yes — but this is assessed individually. We flag all known herb-drug interactions at your initial consultation and, where necessary, recommend you inform your GP. We do not prescribe anything that creates a conflict without explicit discussion.
What is the difference between herbal granules and decoctions?
Decoctions are raw herbs boiled into a tea — the traditional method. Granules are concentrated extracts dissolved in hot water. We prescribe granules as the default: more convenient, hygienic, and consistent in potency without compromising clinical effectiveness.
Do you treat eczema with Chinese herbal medicine?
Yes. Eczema is one of the most frequently treated conditions at our clinics. Our approach combines internal herbal prescriptions targeting the root pattern with dietary and lifestyle guidance. Results vary by severity — we give you a realistic assessment at your first appointment.
